Today, we often hear about augmented reality and augmented reality glasses. We use augmented reality technology on our phones or tablets nowadays. The face filters on Snapchat that we frequently use or the Pokemon Go game we play are the most obvious examples of the daily use of augmented reality. All these filters and game characters are created with augmented reality and there are many more such examples. Augmented reality is the bringing together of our physical world and virtual world, thanks to the addition of digital objects to our physical world. So what are augmented reality (AR) glasses and how do they work? You can find the answers to all these questions in the rest of our article.
Unlike phones and tablets, augmented reality (AR) glasses are wearable devices. They are very similar to regular glasses today, with the biggest difference being that they can add virtual images to our physical world. So what do we mean when we say virtual images? Imagine yourself walking down any street for coffee. When you look at the places where you can drink coffee on the street, you can see the score they get on the internet. Another example is you want to buy a chair from IKEA but wonder how it will look in your room? With your AR glasses, you can see the chair as if it really existed in your room.
Although we live in a 3D world, we are currently experiencing 2D on screens. The biggest innovation that AR glasses will add to our lives is in changing this experience. It enables us to connect with today’s world more interactively and allows us to have a 3D experience. We can use them hands-free since they are wearable glasses. You can view many daily activities such as looking at the clock, learning the weather forecast, reading your e-mails, and many more, directly on the lenses of AR glasses without the need for an external device such as a phone. We learned what AR glasses are and their examples, but how do AR glasses work?
How do augmented reality glasses work?
Augmented reality (AR) glasses have some sensors like lidar and cameras. Thanks to these sensors, smart glasses understand the surrounding environment, identify where and what is happening and create a virtual map of the environment. AR glasses create a virtual map of the environment with special software such as artificial intelligence and machine learning in line with the information coming from the sensors. Also, the glasses track the location of the person wearing them. We can use AR glasses to put a digital object in a physical environment by placing it on a virtual map. We see this object as if it really exists. This virtual map is invisible, so our physical world and the digital objects we want to add to it are visible to us as a whole.
